Everyone knew the name. Nobody was talking about it. My mandate as VP of Brand, Content & Marketing: make it matter the other 50 weeks. I built the brand vision, narrative framework, and content strategy that took X Games from a broadcast-only business to a year-round content ecosystem — award-winning YouTube and livestreams built around the ABC and ESPN broadcasts, athlete and creator-driven storytelling built to compound. Developed the creative standards, narrative system, content strategy and launch plans for key tentpoles across social, live streaming, and broadcast. A team of 22. No paid media. Every number below is organic. Then I made the content pay. Branded content strategy translated story into audience and revenue growth — 2.5x sponsorship and ad revenue in a year. Led media and content representation negotiations with CAA, built an original IP pipeline including a Prime Video follow-doc with Hello Sunshine and a Netflix development deal, and turned a 30-year archive into a new line of business with a FAST channel deal with Roku for X Games TV. That ecosystem became the platform for what came next: part of the leadership team that developed XGL, X Games' shift from tentpole events to a year-round, team-based league. I led the brand, content, and audience strategy for the transition. ### How it worked The engine was a flywheel between social and broadcast. Social edits built personality and fandom year-round, broadcast paid it off live, and the live moments fed social again -- casual scrollers became viewers, viewers became fans. - Interactive livestreaming and fan participation -- chat-driven segments, co-streams, and live voting that made watching something you do, not something you receive - X Games Mode hype meter and context graphics -- on-screen tools that told new audiences why a trick mattered, in real time. Broadcast inventory sponsors could own - Two-boxes and social edits cut into broadcast -- the personality formats fans followed all year, showing up in the live show. Athletes as people, not bibs - Talent out of the booth and onto the courses -- mic'd athletes, sideline access, warm-ups on camera. Context and drama over commentary ### Results (organic) - +1,040% impressions YoY - +132% engagement, +108% video views - +31% broadcast and streaming viewership YoY - +63% organic social followers YoY - 2.5x sponsorship and advertising revenue - FAST channel deal with Roku for X Games TV - 98% positive sentiment ## Launched sports programming on Twitch URL: https://joshrakic.com/work/twitch-sports Twitch · Director of Content Programming & Editorial Sports on Twitch did not exist as a system when I arrived. Experiments, one-off deals, no map. My job: build the Twitch Sports strategy, channel, and programming model behind it. Programmed the NFL for an audience that talks back — co-streams, creators, chat-first broadcasts — and brought the Tokyo Olympics to a generation that doesn't watch TV: athletes, celebrities, and streamers on one broadcast. One creative framework for live, UGC, and rights-holder content, with playbooks partners and creators could replicate. I also led homepage programming and the merchandising and discovery layer — how games, tentpoles, and creator streams got surfaced, personalized, and found across Twitch's browse experience. Underneath the tentpoles: formats and programming that scaled, cross-functional launch workstreams across content, marketing, and commerce, and editorial operations that grew promotion volume 110% in a year. Major moments became consistent audience behavior — and commercial results. $4M in NFL revenue. $2M+ from DIY NYE, with 200,000+ UGC creators activated as participants. ### Results - Thursday Night Football: $4M in revenue, 4x viewership and ratings growth YoY - Tokyo Olympics: 14M unique viewers across 150+ hours in partnership with NBC - Stream Aid: 1M+ concurrent viewers - DIY NYE: $2M+ in revenue, 200,000+ UGC creators activated - +110% YoY content promotion volume ## Launched Amazon's live audio platform URL: https://joshrakic.com/work/amp Amazon Music · Head of Content & Creator Marketing Amp was Amazon reinventing radio: live shows, real hosts, the catalogs of every major label behind them. I was headhunted from Twitch as the fifth hire. No brand, no voice, no creator community. A product in search of a meaning. Built the brand from a blank page — purpose, positioning, personality, voice, pillars, and narrative — then owned everything downstream: content programming, creator marketing, creator education, and the tone-of-voice and copy system that made it real in-product, in-market, and in community. Led launch strategy, copy, and messaging across every channel and team, from product surface to campaign. And because a creator platform without creators is a very quiet place, I built the creator marketing function end to end: onboarding site, education curriculum, and an in-person creator camp. ### Results - #21 on the App Store on launch day, against a top 100 target - 95% positive sentiment among 18-34 creators and listeners - 98% positive creator sentiment across the cohort - Brand frameworks still driving narrative and in-product content at Amazon ## Turned a golf team into a culture brand URL: https://joshrakic.com/work/ripper-gc LIV Golf · Vice President of Brand, Content & Marketing Ripper GC had major winners, limited player access outside competition, and a league still explaining itself. Most teams would post highlights and hope. I made the constraint the strategy: a brand built on lifestyle, humour, and camaraderie, not event footage. Golf reframed for the 18-34 golf-curious — built to earn a new audience, not chase the existing one. Defined the point of view, tone, and social-first programming across YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. Created a repeatable content system — series formats, creator collabs, rollout playbooks — so a small team could scale output without scaling headcount. No paid media. The creative had to earn its own reach. Branded content strategy did the commercial work: doubled branded content revenue and drove $6.2M in earned media. The playbooks were adopted league-wide by LIV — one team's brand system became the operating model for others. ### Results (organic) - #2 LIV team — from #9 in 6 months - +53% audience growth, +78% video views, +74% impressions YoY - $6.2M earned media value - 2x branded content revenue - +30% engagements YoY ## Took Red Bull's voice beyond action sports URL: https://joshrakic.com/work/red-bull Red Bull Media House · Editor, Content Marketing Lead, Executive Producer Seven years inside Red Bull Media House, Sydney and LA, through its shift from print and broadcast into social, digital, and creator-led formats. The best content education on earth, and I got it from the inside. I ran digital for The Red Bulletin, Red Bull's global lifestyle magazine. The play: use audience research to find the cross-genre themes that travel beyond the endemic action sports crowd, then build the editorial strategy around them. Readers arrived who had never watched anyone jump off anything. Built the content playbooks for Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, and a distributed story strategy that grew the female and Gen Z audiences the brand's traditional editorial was not reaching. Finished the run in creative development, building original concepts and IP that moved Red Bull's voice into gaming, music, and pop culture. ### Results - The Red Bulletin: 300K to 1.4M monthly active users - +220% unique views in five months - 10-120% engagement gains from platform playbooks - 20-70% growth in shares, comments, and likes among new audiences in three months ## No creators, no audience URL: https://joshrakic.com/focus/creator-audience-growth I have built creator programs from both sides of the platform: the side that needs creators to show up, and the side that needs audiences to stay. At Amp, I built the creator marketing function end to end — onboarding, education curriculum, in-person creator camp — and drove 98% positive creator sentiment while launching the platform itself. At Twitch, I developed the Sports Creator Program, the model for long-term athlete and creator partnerships. At Ripper GC, creator collabs and repeatable formats grew a golf team's audience 53% in a year, organically. At X Games, athlete-led story rebuilt relevance with an audience that had stopped watching. The thinking underneath is consistent: audiences do not convert through reach, they convert through belonging. Creators are how a brand earns belonging at scale — and how the content pays for itself. Ripper GC's creator collabs — influencer marketing with a system behind it — helped double branded content revenue. Twitch's NFL creator program returned $4M and 4x viewership. I have backed the thinking with primary research too: a three-market Gen Z creator study across the US, UK, and India on what creators actually need, not what platforms assume they want. ## Most companies do not have a creative problem. They have a clarity problem. URL: https://joshrakic.com/focus/brand-strategy Sort the clarity first and the content gets easier. That is the whole practice. I build positioning, narrative, and brand systems from inside the companies that need them, not decks that die in a drive. At Amp, brand purpose, voice, and architecture from a blank page, launched to 95% positive sentiment. At X Games, a repositioning that took a two-weekend broadcast property to a year-round content business at 2.5x revenue. At Ripper GC, a point of view sharp enough to move a team from #9 to #2 in its league without a dollar of paid media. It starts with language: the one-line thought, the positioning, the sentence that makes the room go "yep, that's it." Then the system around it, so the clarity survives contact with a growing team. Positioning is commercial infrastructure — it is what partners buy into before they buy anything. ## One-off wins are not a strategy URL: https://joshrakic.com/focus/content-strategy Most content problems are architecture problems. A viral post is luck. A format that produces one every week is a system, and systems are what I build. At Twitch, a unified programming model that turned tentpole moments into repeatable audience behavior across sports, music, and gaming. At X Games, an always-on engine that doubled as the GTM machine for every tentpole — 1,040% impressions growth and 2.5x sponsorship and ad revenue, organic only. At Ripper GC, series formats and rollout playbooks that let a small team operate at league scale, then got adopted league-wide. The parts: repeatable formats, programming calendars, editorial standards, content discovery and merchandising, publishing workflows, and the measurement that tells you which formats to kill. Audience development is the job; the system is how it holds. Content stops being a stream of one-offs and becomes an operation — one that grows audiences and gives commercial teams branded content to actually sell. ## AI that holds your voice steady URL: https://joshrakic.com/focus/ai-brand-systems Most AI content tools make more. I build ones that keep it sounding like you. At Ripper GC, I built an internal brand voice agent that operationalised our narrative standards across comms, concepts, and team outputs, so the voice survived every hand it passed through. Then I productised the thinking as Servo, a guided AI brand interrogation tool built on 20 years of frameworks: it diagnoses positioning, pressure-tests the story, and keeps the work from wandering as a team grows. The principle: AI is a consistency machine before it is a volume machine. Encode the tone of voice, the editorial rules, and the banned words, and every output starts closer to right. Writing is still the craft. The system is the edge. ## About Josh Rakic URL: https://joshrakic.com/about Josh Rakic is a creative and content leader working across the US and Australia as a dual citizen. I relaunched the X Games, launched sports programming on Twitch, built the brand for Amazon's live audio platform Amp from its fifth hire, and turned LIV Golf's Ripper GC into a culture brand — alongside seven years inside Red Bull Media House. The job is the same everywhere: work backwards from the audience and the commercial goals, then write and build the brand narrative, creative and content to get there. Positioning first. Then the programming, formats and editorial standards that scale it across social, streaming and broadcast. I've sat on both sides of the table — in-house at Amazon, Twitch, X Games and LIV, where strategy gets set, and inside agency processes at ECD level, concepting, writing and pitching. Client side taught me accountability: you live with the results. Agency side keeps you on the tools. I never picked between strategy and craft, so these days I do both — set the direction, write the manifesto, sit with the team until it ships. Before any of it, I was a national newspaper journalist and opinion columnist for The Sydney Morning Herald. I covered Formula 1 and a government plan to weaponize dolphins. Interviewed a prime minister in flip-flops and acid-wash jeans. Ghostwrote best-sellers. Wrote for the screen. Everything since has been the same trade: find the story, tell it so people care, build the machine that keeps telling it. Today I do it inside ambitious companies, sports organisations and creative agencies. I also build AI brand tools — Servo (selfservo.com) and production voice agents running inside working brand teams. ### A little about me Some people peak at seven. The year was 1992. The setting? Outback Australia. After 14 months on a bike, and having shaken the training wheels but months earlier, I secured passage to the Queensland State BMX Finals; renowned as the toughest season in junior BMX before or since. I qualified fastest for the final despite a partially flat rear tyre from too many bunny hops. My pit crew — mum and dad — restored oxygen to my tyres by hand. And with the hopes of the 2B elementary class resting on my freckly shoulders, I set out in search of greatness. No one could have predicted the same rear tyre would explode over the final jump, causing me to lose control and finish second. A bittersweet result for a 7-year-old whose McDonald's Happy Meal relied on first place. My protest was denied. I've not ridden a bike since. And instead dedicated my life to telling stories with better endings.
